It's International Women's Day today! It's also the UN Environmental Assembly that this year looks at sustainable consumption and production. So we thought, what better than to celebrate happy periods! On any given day 800 million people are menstruating and a staggering 4.3 billion disposable menstrual products are used in the UK every year. A ‘conventional’ menstrual pad contains up to 90% crude oil plastic and depending on where it ends up as waste, it could have a longer life-span than the person who uses it!* Here are some of our tips for happy periods without plastic:⁣ ⁣ 1. Reusable pads - make them yourself from old fabrics. You can download a template from @environmenstrual. Spice it up & pick a fabric with a funny motive that speaks to you. Just make sure you pick a fabric that doesn't contain any nasty chemicals.⁣ ⁣ 2. Period panties - comfortable, and doesn't leak. Can be a bit pricey, but in the long run saves you money! Just make sure to follow the clean instructions, so that they will last you longer. Also, avoid those containing nano silver, as when it leaks into the water when cleaning, it can damage ecosystems.⁣ ⁣ 3. Menstrual cups - great alternative to tampons! Once you've found one in your size, that you are comfortable with you can keep it for hours inside of you. They do need you to have access to toilets and clean water, so it might not be optimal for everyone. You clean them by washing them in the sink with a mild soap, and then you boil the cup in water for 10 minutes after your period has ended.⁣ Photo: @p.ssypads⁣ *source: @citytosea_⁣

Just another DIY for my kitchen...? Here I have used the kulhads which I got with the MISTI DOI from CR Park. I am mentioning the place just to tell people how much I like the DOI and the place, especially for food. I find these small small things in my daily life are making me more wiser. As I don't want to throw anything which can be reused and can get more shelf life. I believe in sustainable living and try to make my efforts wherever I can. And I don't mind when people say junk collectors to me. ? Nowadays one good habbit I have developed and I will take it throughout my life and encourage people around me to do the same. I have stopped taking polybags from all the local venders and I also carry my own straw for the coconut water I drink. It's been more then 1.5 years. Every time I go out for buying anything I carry my cloth bags and paper bag for all items. People around usually stare or I could say they have a habbit of starring whenever somebody is not following the so called tradition i.e. saying no to polybag or giving ur bag to put the veggies or any other items. I have to ask the shopkeeper or vender not to give the polybags to me twice as each and everyone has the habbit of picking poly while weighing the product. I always carry my cloth bag in my hand bag. The habbit of carrying cloth bag has increased my work of sorting veggies but I am okay with it... Atleast now I don't have a big polybag stuffed with all small one time used polybags which I was guilty of having everytime I see it. But still I can't avoid the packaging bags which usually come with each and every product u buy otherwise. Nowadays people are aware and few of them are taking steps towards it. Hopefully someday in near future we will have more people with cloth bags instead of multiple polybags... DEFORESTATION: Deforestation is the clear cutting of forested areas for use of agricultural land, urban use, wasteland, etc. Deforestation causes many imbalances ecologically and environmentally, such as large emissions of GHG, and results in huge habitat and biodiversity loss. Forests cover just over 30% of the globe. This is just over 1 quarter of the original percentage. Deforestation is happening at a rate of 1.5 acres every second, if the current rate continues it will take less than 100 years to destroy all of the the worlds rainforests. The overexploitation of forests is making it increasingly difficult to replant new ecology. Some things we can do to include: Cut back on paper usage- not only do they clear cut forests to make paper but the production of paper causes sever effects on quality of air, water, and land. The amount of paper and paper products produced and recycled are so enormous that the impact of the pollution by it is also very significant. Avoid oils such as palm oil- the production of palm oil and deforestation go hand in hand. To build palm plantations, producers clear cut trees in tropical rainforests, destroying some of the most diverse biomes on the planet.
